William Richmond

Notable For: William Richmond moved from Marlborough to find work, and ended up in Scranton, Pennsylvania. After working as a clerk in store's, he eventually made a fortune in anthracite coal mining.
Description: This image was taken from Mary Hall’s book about the 1903 Centennial Celebration of the Incorporation of Marlborough, Connecticut. Richmond was an invited guest to the celebration, and addressed the crowd about his memories of Marlborough. He was 83 years old at the time of the celebration, and lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Notable For: Florence Lord had several careers as a teacher, a politician and librarian. She represented the Town of Marlborough in the General Assembly from 1951-1962, and served as town librarian for 30 prior to her retirement in 1976.
Description: This sketch was completed by William Nystrom, and was included in "Marlborough: 1747-1977" by Florence Lord. He did all the illustrations for this publication.

A few days later, he asked to be reassigned to the 7th Cavalry which had just fought the Battle of Little Big Horn. He served in the Army until 1896, when he retired. He contracted TB while in the Army, and his retirement was caused by this disease. Although records are incomplete, he came to Marlborough and taught in the Center School, a one of the one-room school house, in 1870-1871, before his appointment to West Point. After his retirement from the Army, he went to California in hopes of "curing" his TB, but eventually succumbed to the disease.

Notable For: After working as a teacher for several years, Mary Hall pursued her dream of becoming a lawyer. In 1882, she passed the bar examination, but it took a State Supreme Court decision in her favor to admit her. She became Connecticut's first female lawyer (only the second in the United States to practice law). Later, she founded the Goodwill Club--an organization which housed young, wayward boys, and set up a camp in her hometown of Marlborough. She also wrote several on the history of Marlborough, and was a member of the Colonial Dames of America and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Also, her family owned the Marlborough Tavern (purchased from the original owner, Elisha Buell) until Mary willed it to the Colonial Dames upon her death.
